On April 17, Alternatives began a new project to beautify our unit and its surrounding area. We spent the morning cleaning up the parking lot and reducing litter at 4300 Steeles Ave W. This inspired our program participants and staff to create their own garden! In May we got the OK to start planting our own garden, thanks to CLP Management, our friends and family in the community, and some visitors and new friends we made from the University of South Carolina who volunteered with us for one whole week: Bailey, Macklin, Amelia, Anna and Courtney – we planted 12 tomato plants, zucchini, green beans, basil, rosemary, thyme and parsley. Over the summer months, Alternatives has been watering our garden and plants, and helping to clean up the outside of our unit to keep our space environmentally friendly. For the month of April we even cleaned with natural solutions to help save our environment. In the next few months we will continue to watch our little garden grow. In the fall, we hope to make our own pasta sauce, and call everyone over for a Spaghetti Night – stay tuned!
