On April 24, 2015 we held our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event here at Alternatives, and called it Aperitivo. Each year Alternatives honors our valued volunteers, and tries to use this event to encourage support within our community. Close to 100 people attended to help us celebrate four of our dedicated volunteers: Anna Baldassarra, Marisa Ciccolini, Nella Contardi and Liviana Fantino. These four honored volunteers have been involved with our fundraising activities since we opened including, but not limited to, being on the Board of Directors, helping out at the annual golf tournament and cooking with the Italian Ladies Cooking club a few times a year for the program participants. A video honoring our four volunteers was presented, and our Alternatives Dance Troop performed to Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars, and some of our participants wrote speeches.
The honourable Minister Julian Fantino announced that day that his office helped Alternatives get the HRDC bursary to hire 3 students for the summer to help expand the programming we offer currently. In addition to the HRDC bursary, the Honorable Minister Fantino awarded Alternatives with $5,000 for our program participants to go to a 3 day trip to Ottawa.
At the Volunteer Appreciation Event, Alternatives also officially opened up our Digital Den. 7 computers were donated by Dundee Corporation Ltd, and computer desks were handcrafted by Hammerstrong Contracting, in addition Steartech Technologies helped set up the computers. Our participants now use the Digital Den every day to write stories and poems, look up different videos, and play all kinds of games. In the upcoming months, Alternatives will be launching a new technology program that is catered specifically to the needs of each individual. Our Volunteer Appreciation Event was also the launch of a campaign asking for $10,000 to support our technology program. If you or anyone you know would like to support this campaign and would like to have this program named after you please contact email@example.com
