PROGRAMS

Alternatives has created an environment of caring and respect that positively impacts our participants. Our program meets the needs of the "whole" person by providing a range of meaningful activities that promote learning and involvement in literacy, life skills development, social skills development, work skills development, volunteering and recreational pursuits.

Program Components:

Learning For Life

This program consists of participation in a variety of educational based activities. These activities include:

  • Literacy development
  • Development of self care skills
  • Development of social & communication skills

Working & Productivity

This program focuses on encouraging the development of appropriate work skills and participating in a variety of both paid and unpaid employment experiences in order to develop job readiness skills. Our community partners offer safe and meaningful opportunities that enable the people we support to contribute productively in the work place. Our trained Job Coaches assist people as required while promoting optimal independence and involvement in the workplace.

Through various community partners (including Chocolate Concepts and Villa Leonardo Gambin) people supported through Alternatives are able to develop skills in many areas including food handling and preparation, packaging, chocolate manufacturing, laundry services, food and retail experience and many other skills related to both employment and volunteer experiences.

Recreation & Community Life

This program emphasizes the importance of fun and friendship in the lives of everyone. Participants enjoy the freedom to choose fun activities that are of interest to them. For many, friendships have been formed over the years and the participants value the time they are able to spend together enjoying the community. Recreational outings generally take place on Fridays and include involvement in a range of community-based activities. Activities are designed to promote positive social skills, develop positive relationships and broaden individual's experencies within their communities.

Alternatives is an environment created to provide positive support to all people we support. Staff work in a manner that provides both care and respect to all. Programs promote learning and involvement in literacy, life skills, social skills and vocational skill development People are offered opportunities to work, volunteer and pursue recreational opportunities on a regular basis.
