Health & Wellness
At Alternatives, we ensure that all participants have an opportunity to enjoy a variety of in-house and community-based activities with a focus on ‘fun’! Recreation activities are a time to continue to develop social skills, communication skills and build on relationships while participating in a more fun, relaxed setting. Participants have the opportunity to attend various recreational activities offered in the community, including movies, musicals/plays, downtown Toronto adventures, amusement parks, swimming, restaurants, and many more! Our In-house activities aim to promote inclusion, creativity, but most of all fun, and can consist of a multitude of different programs including art, obstacle courses, cooking and baking, DIY projects, dance parties, charades, and so much more! These fun-focused days are used as a means of increasing community awareness, practising TTC/transit training, promoting healthy lifestyles and friendships as well as social skills development with their peers, as well as community members.
This component of our program is integral to Alternatives. Most of the skill acquisition described, are learned and practised multiple times a week, and in the community where skills are naturally used. Emphasis is placed on developing community linkages and providing participants with the independence to choose from any activity they could possibly imagine; giving them the opportunity to plan and attend an experience of their choice.
